Eco-friendly brands to buy next time you're at the supermarket

Written for The Plantifull Food Co

In these weird times, creating a sustainable future is still something we strive to achieve, perhaps even more so. By encouraging your friends or family to eat just one less meat meal a week, it’s a huge impact. But, what if we can go above having a vegan diet?

As we try to minimise how often we go food shopping, it’s useful to be able to get everything all from one place. While we love supporting independent businesses, sometimes it can be easier to pop to your local Waitrose.

But this doesn’t mean you can’t find eco-friendly brands on the shelves. So, if you’re looking to minimise your environmental impact, or just doing the weekly shop, these are some of our favourite plant-based brands in supermarkets at the moment.

Innocent Drinks

From smoothies to juice shots, Innocent’s drinks are delicious but also good for the planet. The company buys fruit through the Rainbow Alliance, who help farmers retain the land’s biodiversity and protect their rights. They’ve also been using recycled plastic since 2003 and give 10% of their yearly profits to charity.

Their canned bubble drinks make the perfect pair to our Creamy Mac pot or you could grab one of their smoothie’s post-workout with a pack of our plant-based jerkies. What a pair!

The Coconut Collaborative

A company committed to spreading the word about how cutting dairy can save the planet. Every year, they work with Pur Project to plant thousands of coconut trees to support Southeast Asian farmers in Bali. Doing this helps regenerate soil, provide habitats for wildlife and sustainable incomes for communities. Also, we love adding a dollop of their dairy-free natural yogurt to our Coronation Chickpea pot!

Method

Cleaning products which are perfect for clearing any after dinner mess and all the ingredients come from plants rather than chemicals. None of their products are ever tested on animals and the bottle is made from 100% recycled plastic. Happy home and happy planet at the same time? Yes please.

Ecover

Another sustainable powerhouse revolutionising the way we wash our dishes and clothes. They have a new washing up liquid made using 25% waste ingredients left over from beer brewing and they’re bottled in their True Zero Waste Certified factory. Cleaning superheroes and eco-warriors. A big tick from us.

Rude Health

Looking for a tasty milk alternative? Rude Health are committed to sourcing organic, sustainably grown ingredients, and all of their packaging is either recyclable or biodegradable. Along with nut milks, granola and cereals, they also sell chickpea and lentil crackers which are delicious topped with sliced tomato as a starter to our Shroomy Risotto pot.

Hopefully, this has given you some inspiration for your next supermarket shop – but don’t forget most brands are still available to order online. Our meal pots are also sold in Ocado giving you the perfect excuse to stock up on weeknight dinners without having to leave the house. Plus, you can buy all these brands at the same time!
